Crucial practices in maintaining the lifespan of an EV battery

Studies reveal that over 14 Mn electric vehicles were on the road as of last year, and the value is still going up despite the challenge of coronavirus pandemic. Currently, the global electric vehicle market stands at 3.42 Mn units and is expected to rise 4.18 Mn units in 2021 if a CAGR remains 22.1%. 

The gas prices for ICE vehicles are steadily rising day in day out. People are becoming aware of the environmental pollution caused by petrol and diesel cars. For this reason, they are looking for substitute vehicles that can counteract this challenge. Electric vehicles might be the solution that people long for, given that they are eco-friendly and affordable countrywide. 

The transition to clean energy technology creates a desire for cheap, safe, and robust batteries for the Evs. These Evs are gaining favor among the citizens leading to the need to understand how to utilize the batteries effectively and efficiently. Here are some of the concepts that we must understand to maintain the lifespan of the EV batteries:

Since these batteries drain their energy fast, it is crucial to charge them regularly. An EV owner must use the battery while it’s State of Charge (SOC) ranges between 50 and 80 percent. SOC is the quantity of energy remaining in a battery in comparison to its capacity. The battery must never be left at a SOC of 20% to avoid the interference of its electronic components. 

The battery should not be 100% charged when it is not in use. Leaving it in this state is dangerous since energy in the battery will start dissipating into the surrounding. This process is known as self-discharging. Additionally, leaving the battery in a completely discharged state for an extended period can result in irreversible reactions within the battery, which is detrimental to the battery’s lifespan. 

The EV owner must ensure that the battery does not discharge completely before recharging it. The owner must try as hard as possible to ensure that once the battery reaches 30 percent, it is being charged. This concept will lengthen the life of the battery. 

The EV battery should never be exposed to fast chargers and extreme temperatures when charging and storing them. The same reason that EV batteries come with cooling and heating options warrants the need to avoid treating them to extreme temperatures. External temperatures can cause degradation of the cells during charging or activate self-discharge. On the other hand, fast chargers wear out the battery packs quickly. 

As new products, it is advisable to read and understand the battery’s maintenance practices to discern how to prolong its lifetime and that of your car model. The EV owner must read through the specific maintenance instructions indicated by the manufacturer of the model that they are purchasing. 

Finally, it is essential to maintain hygiene by cleaning the car regularly, especially during the coronavirus pandemic. The car driver must clean the car with disinfecting wipes and wash hands regularly after every drive.
